More and more people use mobile gadgets to access the Internet, so the need for mobile-friendly websites is steadily growing. To fulfill this demand, the entity that controls the generic domain name extensions, ICANN, introduced the .MOBI domain name extension in 2005. The first registrations were started in September 2006, and the intention behind this domain extension is that all websites that use it need to comply with special requirements. In other words, all dot MOBI websites ought to be created to be viewed correctly by mobile devices in agreement with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” formulated by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in collaboration with the .MOBI Registry organization. These involve how a web page is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), and so on.
The restrictions have provoked some questions taking into account that the universal domain extension is the only one that specifies what devices should be able to access a website and the way in which this needs to happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a site should be created in such a way as to be opened by the majority of web browser applications and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
